Dentures

Bespoke, comfortable and natural looking dentures.

Dentures are prosthetic oral appliances that are used to replace missing teeth. Like bridges or dental implants, which are permanently attached to the jaw bone, dentures use the supporting structures of your mouth to function.

If you are missing a few or even all of your teeth, dentures might be the right solution for you. Your denture will be prepared in a way that it fits securely on the gums but so that you can remove them for cleaning.

At Ashfield Dental, our dentists know the importance of good oral health in improving your appearance and smile. With this in mind, our team ensure that they create dentures that fit well and improve the smile of their patients.

Our dentists use the latest techniques and materials to make customised dentures that will fit the individual requirements of each patient.

The different kinds of dentures provided are:

Complete dentures

The dentures help in replacing a complete set of arches when you lose all your teeth. An acrylic plastic base that is coloured to match with the gums having a full set of teeth is usually made from resin that fits over the gums. Our dentists will take the necessary measurements so that technicians can prepare customised dentures that will fit comfortably over the jawbone and gums. Your dentist will ensure your dentures are comfortable and give you advice on cleaning them properly to keep them in good condition.

Partial dentures

These dentures are used to replace one or more teeth and can be used if some natural teeth remain. These replacement teeth are particularly made to fit in the gaps that you have and combine with the remaining teeth. These can be fixed to the metal frameworks that attaches to natural teeth to hold them in place.

It may take you a little time to get used to your new dentures. However, modern dentures are more comfortable than dentures were previously.

Benefits of wearing dentures:

  • You can restore your smile
  • Dentures are extremely durable and last for a long time
  • They allow you to eat more foods and speak normally
  • You can remove your dentures easily when needed and at night
  • They provide great support to the remaining teeth

FAQs

Dentures replace teeth and look like real teeth. They can be put inside your mouth and removed, when needed. Though dentures may not feel like natural teeth, they look natural and should be extremely comfortable.

You will soon get used to eating with your dentures in.

Though you can wear your dentures at night it is suggested you remove them while sleeping. This will provide both your bones and gums the chance to relax from the pressure of wearing dentures throughout the day. However, you should avoid wearing dentures for 24 hours and always ensure that you maintain good oral health and hygiene.

It is quite normal to experience some kind of gum pain during the few weeks after you wear new dentures. This might be due to your dentures not fitting well or rubbing against the gums.

You should eat soft foods only in order to make your first few meals with dentures comfortable. Some of these include:

  • Hot cereals
  • Pudding & jelly desserts
  • Apple sauce
  • Broth
  • Mashed vegetables
  • Yogurt

Though dentures need to be replaced in time, they may last for many years with proper care and maintenance. In general, the dentists may suggest getting new dentures every five to eight years as they will get worn due to daily usage and your gums may also change shape over the years.

  • Rinse and remove your dentures after eating
  • Clean your mouth after you remove the dentures
  • Brush the dentures at least once a day
  • Soak your dentures overnight
  • Rinse dentures thoroughly before you put them back in your mouth.

If the dentures break in half, then this kind of breakage and cause will have an impact on whether the denture needs to be repaired. Your dentist will discuss all possible options while your dentures are being prepared at the dental laboratory.
